Great DVD, but it's obsolete nowFeb 28, 2009
By Justin Gaines Things weren't looking bright for Angra in 2000. Half the lineup, including vocalist Andre Matos, split to form Shaman, and the band's future seemed in doubt. Instead of calling it quits, a new and improved lineup emerged with what was arguably the band's strongest album - 2001's Rebirth. The album and the new Angra lineup were embraced my metal fans, especially in the band's home country of Brazil, as evidenced by the Rebirth World Tour - Live in Sao Paolo DVD.
Main Program - Filmed late in 2001, Rebirth World Tour - Live in Sao Paolo showcases one of the best bands in the progressive/power metal genre in front of a very enthusiastic home crowd. The band's energy is matched by the crowd's, which goes a long way towards making viewers feel like they are part of the experience. The new Angra lineup only had one album under their belt at the time, so the set was heavy with songs from Rebirth as well as a few staples from the Andre Matos era. This was interesting since I'm always fascinated when new singers take on material from the band's earlier work. New frontman Edu Falaschi has a tremendous voice, but it's obvious he wasn't quite as comfortable on stage as he would later become. Still, the band was in top form, and the whole show was the kind of grand production you look for on a DVD release. Honestly, just about every song was a highlight, but the band's closing song - a rousing rendition of the Iron Maiden classic "Number of the Beast" - deserves special mention. They closed their set at 2002's ProgPower USA festival the same way, and I swear the whole audience broke out in chills.
Bonus Features -
The Verdict: Rebirth World Tour - Live in Sao Paolo is a fantastic performance from a band that is leagues ahead of its peers. No one sounds quite like Angra (OK, Shaman does, but that's perfectly understandable), and this outstanding DVD captures the band's spirit and energy perfectly.
NOTE: You may have noticed that the Rebirth World Tour DVD is out of print, and that it is commanding a fairly high price from individual sellers. Before you part with your hard-earned cash you should know that the reason this DVD is out of print is that it was later included as a bonus disc with the limited edition of the band's excellent 2005 album Temple of Shadows. That's right; you not only get a killer progressive/power metal concept album, but the full live DVD as well. If you don't already own Rebirth World Tour - Live in Sao Paolo, that is the best way to get it.
