Tejano masterpieceJun 18, 2005
By Christopher Bonds Les Blank and Chris Strachwitz are national treasures. They have a way of taking seemingly mundane footage and turning it into a life-changing experience without injecting any personal commentary. Chulas Fronteras is a film that stays in the mind long after viewing, because it is not just about a culture, but about what it means to be human among fellow humans. See it if you love Tejano music and culture. See it if you don't know anything about Tejano music and culture. See it even if you think you don't like Tejano music and culture, because you will still learn something from it.

Local Music and Tex-Mex CultureNov 18, 2004

CHULAS FRONTERAS is almost thirty years old - but the culture hasn't changed; it's still as relevant today as it was 30 years ago when this film was first made.
Much of CHULAS is wordless and depicts the local music and culture: lack of narration allows for more focus on both scenery and sound.
And, what sound: from a rollicking polka band to a ball waltz and Latin party music.

A great documentary about the roots of Tex-Mex musicJul 28, 2003
By Van DeLisle If you have any interest at all in Tex-Mex music check out this absolutely fantastic documentary. A very loving and knowledgable look at early Tejano music. The section on Lydia Mendoza alone is worth the price. Thanks to John Conquest for bringing this to my attention.

Classic films on Chicano Culture!!May 12, 2007

I remember seeing this flim when I was a teenager in college...CHULAS FRONTERAS is almost thirty years old!!!! I loved the vision of Chicano culture living, growing and evolving even in the most inhospitable environments. The loving look of the film at the people who lived between two cultures was very enlightening.
Today when the word "Chicano" has been replaced in the heats and minds of Mexican American youth by "Hispanic" , "Latino" and other bland meaningless terms, it is important to have this film available for a new and more materialistic generation, to see what our rotts are.
