The subject of the Broadway play "Souvenir," the Pennsylvania-born Jenkins attained her own unlikely stardom in the early 20th century by performing Mozart, Verdi, Strauss, and more...and doing so quite badly. This documentary examines the life of the eccentric socialite who remained certain she was a great vocalist, in spite of overwhelming evidence to the contrary. 89 min. Queen of the High ShrieksJun 01, 2008
By Michael J. Colbruno Most of us have laughed along to Florence Foster Jenkins butchering the Queen of the Nights aria. It has become a party classic and for good reason. It's nice to know a little about the woman other than that she was the worst "professional" opera singer of the 20th century. With no actual footage of her performing, the makers of this film have done a masterful job of telling her story and explaining her "craft."

This respectful and thoughtful treatment of one of music's greatest oddities is not done at all in the manner one might have imagined.
While the subject hefself is one often lampooned and spoken of chiefly in humor, Donald Collup's treatment of Ms. Foster Jenkins is respectful, never glib or condescending. Indeed, one is in a matter of minutes transported almost as if by magic to the early 20th century and the rarified world of ladies' music societies, witness the burdgeoning of the commercialization of arts, private clubs and a society that has long since faded into obscurity. It's a fascinating world rich with social columns and scandal, clandestine love affairs and makes Jenkins' story come alive as though she'd only just left us. Yes, you will crack up watching it - but it also tugs at the heartstrings in a manner I suspect few will be prepared for.
It is a thought profoking, and remarkable film.

A Treasure for a TreasureSep 12, 2007
By A Fan in Texas Florence Foster Jenkins was in some ways a national treasure who certainly shared her love of music in her own unique way. She is a part of American music folklore, one that contributed to legendary stories and great amusement over her varied gifts. Mr. Collup has created an honest, loving, and ulitmately touching portrait of a remarkable soul. His tribute is certainly one of the most honest of all the recent works attempting to tell her story, complete with amazing photographs and recordings of her singular vocal performances.

Anyone who sings should be in touch with the story of Florence Foster Jenkins. She showed that friends can sustain a person, to a point. It's a sad story about a fine woman who meant well. As a singer, I know many people like her.

Every fan of Opera, Music, and Comedy should own this DVD. For an ice breaker after the second round of drinks - THIS is the DVD to play. Jenkins certainly lived in a world ALL her own.
