....while maybe not a big name this Toronto based Havana Conservatory pianist/arranger showcases his talents here with a quite large aggregation of fine players.Filmed entirely 'live in the studio' without chit-chat,orchestral versions of tunes by Chucho,Chano Pozo and originals with tasty soloing by Paquito and 'ElNegro'. More like say Chico/Arturo O'Farrill than the Miami Jam big band still a very enjoyable,hi-quality latin session.....

I've seen Hilario Duran play live a few times and it can be an athletic and spiritual experience. He's also very satisfying on his records. Therefore it's great to have this DVD account of a major recording session which is pretty much no-frills visually, but the arranging and performances are perfection itself. D'Rivera is a warm and invigorating presence at any time, but here it's plain to see he's very fond of Duran's writing and bandleading skills and he responds sensitively and sweetly in his solos.
The band comprises exceptional musicians from Toronto and talented emigres from Cuba... at times the feel and density of the Boss Brass are invoked in the collective passages: lovely. There are many exhilirating moments here, and the charts are tricky but coherent. No 'machismo-leninismo', as Paquito once tagged the flamboyant-but-empty virtuosity of some hot players.
This is passionate big band jazz with some serious dynamics and soulful precision...
