Mexico's Prince of SongJan 06, 2007
By Alejandra Vernon

Jose Jose, known as El Principe de la Cancion, was born in 1948, and is one of Mexico's finest and most unique vocal interpreters of ballads. His career started to take off in the late '60s, and this collection starts with a song from the 1971 Festival de la Cancion Latina. The sound is uneven in this DVD with a couple of tracks below standard; however, these 2 tracks have value for other reasons. All are in color except where noted in the track list.
Jose Jose has had a long and brilliant career, though in the late '90s his battle with alcohol addiction took its toll, and ravaged his voice. He mostly performes as an actor now, and has recently been seen in the enormously successful telenovela "La Fea Mas Bella" on Univision. Everyone will have a song they wish had been included in this collection, and for me it's "La Nave del Olvido," but nevertheless it's an interesting overview of a great career. The DVD is approximately 45 minutes long, and has an extensive photo gallery as an "extra." Track list: 1: "Triste." The sound is abysmal, but is a piece of musical history, and fascinating to watch as this incredibly young singer brings the audience to its feet. 2: "Una Manana." (b&w) A jazzy, wonderful song. 3: "Mi Nina." 4: "El Amar Y El Querer." One of his terrific interpretations of a Manuel Alejandro opus. Tops in every way (even to the amusing '70s set). 5: "Buenos Dias Amor." How a very ordinary song can be made listenable by El Principe. 6: "Almohada." Bad sound, but sung with such passion that it is riveting. 7: "Voy a Llenarte Toda." He looks as well as sounds great in this song, another from Manuel Alejandro. 8: "Lo que Quedo de Mi." Sheer perfection. My favorite track of the collection. 9: "No Valio la Pena." (b&w) A video with a story, and one of El Principe's big hits. 10: "Grandeza Mexicana." A heartwarming, wonderful song. 11: "La Fuerza de la Sangre." This one is about a father/son relationship, and it is a duet with his son. 12: "Ojala que Te Mueras." A sad video about a marital break-up.

A wonderful walk down memory laneJul 16, 2009

Jose Jose is a remarkable artist, and it is wonderful to have his legacy perpetuated in a video. This video is not a perfect video because it covers an era when there was no such thing as a perfect video. Regardless, I've enjoyed watching it over and over again.
