Full-length rehearsal of Beethoven's 7thApr 21, 2009

"No Time, No Money"
Bohm, primarily known for his conducting of Mozart's symphonies, but also noted for his academic approach to Beethoven, is shown in this video rehearsing the Wiener Philharmoniker on Beethoven's 7th Symphony (the "dance symphony"). The rehearsal appears to be a pre-studio recording one, as the orchestra is already doing a great job. But we get to see how Bohm, famous/notorious for his polite but demanding rehearsals, works the orchestra into giving a very nice account of the 7th symphony -- which, to many, is a difficult work to "get right" due to its large variations and subtle demands of rhythms and dynamics. The rehearsal section of the DVD runs 55 minutes.
Then, a full performance (in black & white, and possibly in mono) of the 7th is given, followed by a performance (in color and stereo) of Dvorak's 9th symphony. (There's no rehearsal of Dvorak's 9th on the DVD.) Dvorak's 9th is one of those pieces that are nice to hear, but at times you wish sections of it would just go away, as it tends to drag on and on without the musical intensity, the focus, and the force of Beethoven's symphonies. (We are not talking blowing hard into the trumpets or trombones for sound effects here.) Bohm's conducting is admirable, though, as he works the piece into a dynamic presentation -- a surprise for me given that I'd always considered him a gentle interpreter of Mozart.
For classical symphony aficinados, this DVD is very nice to own and watch, esp. the Beethoven rehearsal section. Another rehearsal DVD worth considering, too, is the Karajan one on Beethoven and Schumann, although the Beethoven presentation there is short.
