All He Has to do is Show Up, and We Will ComeJan 16, 2011

ADDENDUM 5/06/2011 - For over a year there were rumors put out by the Brasilian press that Roberto Carlos was never going to perform again. Since then he has performed several times, but only in Brasil. His daughter, Ana, died mid-April and he was scheduled for a couple of concerts - one in Vitoria (where is that anyone?) and the other in Miami. A couple of years ago his team was looking at Los Angeles but apparently they got the impression that not enough people would come if he appeared there. Silly, silly decision! This is a star to see, no matter how old he is. His voice is the same as it was 20 years ago - pitch perfect.

"Acustico" is totally different from Roberto Carlos' concert DVD's. In some ways, better - in others, not so much. You get a very close, intimate look at this great entertainer in a small venue. As always, he gives enormous credit to visiting musicians and his own orchestra members. A more generous star has never existed when it comes to sharing the limelight and showing gratitude to those who make music with him.
He doesn't do as many songs (14) and the setting does not create the electricity you find in the "Pra Sempre" concert from Brasil, but I like that he sings with sincerity in this DVD, much more so than in the "En Vivo" concert from 2009 (?) in Miami. He sings among other songs - Detalhes, Acrostico, E proibido Fumar, E preciso saber viver, Emocoes, and of course, Jesus Cristo. He did not choose my personal favorites, such as Cafe de Manha, La Cavalgada, Que Sera De Ti or Perdona, but any of the songs he chooses from his huge repertoire are wonderful.
At the close, everyone is so pleasantly relaxed, they forget to get on their feet when they applaud until he is walking off stage and done tossing roses to the audience - putting one red and one white in his jacket pocket for Maria Rita, the wife he lost to cancer in 1999. He brings her up frequently throughout this performance. It appears there are perhaps less than 200 people in the audience, some of them guest musicians, and he dedicates the program as always, to her.
He is so d- - - gorgeous in this DVD. Long salt and pepper hair, wearing the usual blue jacket over a white T-shirt, tight pale blue jeans - you get the picture. He is a man aging gracefully and his face just gets more beautiful with time, as does his voice. This DVD is worth the money, but just be prepared for a very calm, relaxed atmosphere - no supercharging here and not as long as his concerts, but as always with anything Roberto Carlos -you get more than what you pay for.
As for his group thinking not enough people would show up for a concert in LA - think again. There are fans on the West Coast who would pay anything to see this man perform, and I am one of them. All he has to do is show up and we will come.

Roberto Carlos is the latin Elvis. In this MTV make great classic of you rock & roll music and more. The sound, the light, the band, all, all, is excellent!!!
