It was back in the late 19th century in Rio de Janeiro when Brazilian musicians started to blend European melodies, Afro-Brazilian rhythms and the melancholic interpretation of the Brazilian Indians' music to create Choro. Choro is credited as being the first musical expression of Brazil's melting pot and had a prominent place in the development of Brazil's cultural identity. Choro remained a major popular music style until the 1920s, leading directly into Samba and later to Bossa Nova. After a slight decline in popularity, Choro music has made a remarkable comeback over the past few decades. The film remembers the history but shows, above all, a colorful picture of Choro's vitality today. | | | Features: | |

The Sound Of RioJun 02, 2007

"swamp-music"
An absolute must for any classical guitarist, mandolin player, ethnomusicologist or anyone in need of a musical revival. Yamandu is at an almost spiritual level of one-ness with his seven string guitar. I wonder though why Jacob Do Bandolim is not mentioned, where his compositions feature strongly.

Great Music Fantastic ImagesJan 31, 2007
By M+ If you like latin music, you should get this!! I didn't know much about Choro but it's a very groovy sound. I love it! The film has beautiful images and shows a different side of Rio de Janeiro. And it all culminates in a concert at the end!!

Great introduction to "choro"Dec 05, 2007
By D. Guillen-nakamura This DVD is a great introduction to the "choro" style of music. This is the ancestor of bossa, and also blends nicely with samba. Choro is the urban musical style of Rio. Features excellent artists such as Yamandu Costa, Trio Madeira Brazil, Paulo Moura, Guinga, Ze da Velha & Silverio Pontes, Joel Nascimento, Jorginho do Pandeiro, Marcos Suzano, and singers such as Teresa Cristina & Pedro Miranda, Elza Soares, Adamilde Fonseca, Zeze Gonzaga, and others. Playing music of excellent composers such as Ernesto Nazareth, Pixinguinha, Dilermando Rios, etc. Watch the trailer here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSuDm61CedA

Wonderful!Dec 03, 2007
By Douglas Auwarter This DVD showcases a style of music from Rio de Janeiro known as "Choro." It's a very vibrant, beautiful, joyous style and the participants are all famous virtuoso performers. There's also a nice blend of the "old guard" and the new. The cinematography is first-rate as are the interviews and story line. This movie is a must-see for anyone wanting to learn more about this style of music, and it will make you want to board a plane for Rio as quickly as you can get your bags packed.
